Aristeus antennatus common name “Purpleshrimp”,is a decapod crustacean belonging to the Aristeidae family,coming from the Mediterranean Sea and fished with trawls mainly by the sailors of Mazara del Vallo. It lives in areas with soft bottoms, usually muddy, up to 1440 m deep, although during the night it moves towards the surface.
The body hardly exceeds 22 cm. The coloration is pale red, often with purplish shades; together with the three teeth on the upper part of the rostrum it allows the distinction with Aristaeomorpha foliacea (Red Shrimp),with a more intense color.
